Underlap and Overlap, 2026, Silkscreen, 18 x 24 in.
Underlap and Overlap, a small edition silkscreen was developed alongside the works in this exhibition and extends my use of the grid as a compositional tool. Here, the grid operates as both structure and surface—sometimes singular, sometimes all-over—while shapes are woven through it to create depth, rhythm, and movement.
To make this work, I began by painting sheets of paper and then hand-cut specific shapes that are layered, repeated, or used as solid forms within a larger composition.
In the planning stages of Underlap and Overlap, the cut shapes were physically taped into place, alternating between foreground and background. Some elements slip beneath the grid, while others rest on top, creating moments of interruption and passage. This back-and-forth—between surface and depth, containment and release—became the guiding logic for the final print.
The resulting silkscreen retains the sensibility of the cut-paper original, translating its physical layering and spatial negotiations into a printed form.
This was my first silkscreen (!) and was developed and printed under the guidance of Henry Brown at Salad Editions in Providence, RI.”
